Kaua'i Helicopter Tour: Explore Jurassic Falls, Napali Coast & More

If you had only one single chance for a helicopter ride in your life – make it count and do it on Kauai. That’s what they said—and now, having flown over the Garden Island myself, I couldn’t agree more. The experience was unforgettable, and I’m here to share everything you need to know about taking to the skies with Island Helicopters and why it’s so much more than just a scenic flight.

Why a Helicopter Tour in Kaua’i?

I’ve flown in helicopters, small airplanes, and even water planes before, and each time, it’s been an adventure filled with excitement. But flying over the Garden Island—a place I’ve long associated with my childhood love for movies like Jurassic Park—was something else entirely. It’s a moment so special, it’s hard to put into words. I’ll do my very best in this article to convey the goosebumps and magic I felt, both through my words and some photos.

Kaua’i is known as the Garden Island for a reason—its lush landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and cascading waterfalls are legendary. However, 75% of the island’s beauty is only accessible via air due to its rugged terrain, private lands, and dense jungle.

While highlights like the Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon are spectacular, my biggest surprise was how much more there is to see. From the hidden Hanapepe Valley to the mist-shrouded Mt. Waialeale Crater, flying over these landscapes offered a new perspective on Kaua’i that left me awestruck.

My Experience with Island Helicopters

After some research, we chose Island Helicopters, and it turned out to be the perfect decision. Their focus on safety, comfort, and local expertise set them apart—and ultimately, made the flight an unforgettable adventure.

Safety and Comfort

Doors on / doors off decisions

On Kaua’i, you’ll find multiple operators offering helicopter tours, and a few even provide “doors off” flights. Yes, you read that correctly—flying over Kaua’i with nothing but air between you and the breathtaking views. I’ll admit, I was a little tempted by this idea, mostly because I was worried about reflections in my photos and videos. But after learning more about Island Helicopters and their decision to strictly offer closed-door flights, it made total sense—and now, having flown with them, I can 100% say I’m so glad we chose them. Also Jan, my husband, wasn’t fully convinced about the idea of a helicopter ride at first. But when we learned that Island Helicopters emphasizes safety by only offering closed-door flights, he was on board.

Comfort and pure joy

Sitting comfortably in the helicopter as the island opened up beneath us, I felt completely at ease. No wind blowing in my face, no worries about anything falling out, just the ability to fully take in the experience. As the lush greens of Hanapepe Valley stretched out below, I thought, This is exactly how it’s meant to be. The safety, comfort, and clarity of the view made every moment that much more enjoyable—and the reflections I had been worried about? They weren’t an issue at all, thanks to some tips from Island Helicopters (more on that below).

No disruptions

Island Helicopters also has a strict no-passenger-microphone policy during the flight. While it may seem restrictive, it actually enhances the experience. Without interruptions, the carefully curated soundtrack and the pilot’s expert narration create an atmosphere that feels cinematic and deeply immersive.

Island Helicopters’ Jurassic Falls Tour

One of the biggest draws of flying with Island Helicopters is their exclusive access to Manawaiopuna Falls, famously known as “Jurassic Falls” from the ‘original’ Jurassic Park.

As we left Lihue Airport, approaching the endless greenery of Hanapepe Valley, the first strains of the Jurassic Park theme started playing in our headsets. It beams you to a different world immediately—a sense of excitement and nostalgia all at once. A few minutes later, our pilot turns down the volume and in his charismatic voice tells us “Welcome to Jurassic Park”. This was my first, but not last goosebump moment.

Shortly after takeoff, we landed near the 400-foot-tall waterfall, surrounded by dense jungle. This landing is an exclusive privilege of Island Helicopters, as the falls are located on privately owned land. Walking the jungle path to the falls, we were guided by our pilot, Brody, who shared first-hand insights about the filming of Jurassic Park.

Brody showed us behind-the-scenes photos from the original film set, including the construction of the iconic helicopter landing scene. His stories about being on location during filming brought the experience to life in a way that no movie could replicate.

Standing at the base of the falls, listening to Brody’s storytelling, I felt like I’d stepped into another world. And knowing how rare it is to visit this spot made the moment even more magical.

The Aerial Tour: Highlights and Goosebumps

Once we took off again, the magic truly began. As we soared over Waimea Canyon, known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” the landscape shifted from fiery orange cliffs to the emerald greens of the Napali Coast.

Napali Coast & viewpoints we explored on foot

While the landing at Jurassic Falls was undoubtedly a highlight of the helicopter ride, the jaw-dropping moments didn’t stop there. The Goosebumps didn’t leave as Brody guided us over Kauai’s incredible landscapes—from the green Hanapepe Valley to the orange-hued Olokele Canyon, then on to the sweeping grandeur of Waimea Canyon and the deep blue waters of the Napali Coast.

Every minute, the views seemed to get better and better. When Brody pointed out the infamous Kalalau Trail and Hanakapi’ai Beach, which we had hiked just days before, I couldn’t help but feel awestruck. Seeing the overgrown ridges dropping abruptly into the sea, forming the dramatic cliffs that give the Napali Coast its name (pali = cliffs), was an entirely new way to appreciate the island.

It’s always special to see a place from a new perspective, especially one you’ve explored on foot. This flight felt like the icing on the cake after a week of adventuring around Kaua’i by car and some trails. Seeing paths we had hiked, like the Awa’awapuhi Trail, viewpoints such as Kalalau Lookout, and beaches like Tunnel Beach, Ke’e Beach, and Hanalei Bay from a bird’s-eye view made the experience deeply personal. It brought a sense of completion to our time on the island.

Kauai from above with Island Helicopters

Mt. Waialeale Crater – My personal highlight

But the most emotional moment for me came as we flew into the Mt. Waialeale Crater, one of the wettest places on Earth. Fog and clouds covered the mountain tops, and raindrops began to tap gently against the windshield. Everything around us, as far as the eye could see, was as lush as you could possibly imagine. Steep ridges and deep valleys surrounded us, cascading with countless waterfalls.

As Brody shared more about Kaua’i’s history and geography, explaining how the island was formed millions of years ago, the atmosphere became even more surreal. Then, with perfect timing, he turned up the volume on the soundtrack of Gladiator and said in his resonant voice:

“I’ll let you be with yourself. Welcome to the birthplace of Kaua’i.”

The music swelled, and the sight of the Weeping Wall—a seemingly endless series of waterfalls cascading down the Crater’s emerald walls—left me speechless. It was like stepping into a dream, a scene you’d only expect to exist in the movies.

In that moment, I felt incredibly small yet deeply connected to something much greater. The sheer power of nature was humbling, and I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the rare opportunity to witness such an untouched, magical place. It was an experience that will stay with me forever.

Why Choose Island Helicopters?

  1. Local Expertise: All pilots are Kaua’i residents with in-depth knowledge of the island’s history, geography, and culture. Their skilled and culturally accurate narration adds a deeper layer to the experience, making the tour as informative as it is breathtaking.
  2. Exclusive Access: Island Helicopters is the only operator allowed to land at Manawaiopuna Falls, famously known as “Jurassic Falls.” This exclusive privilege sets them apart from other operators and offers an unparalleled experience.
  3. Safety First: Closed-door flights and strict communication policies ensure a smooth and secure experience. The absence of passenger microphones during the flight enhances safety and allows for an uninterrupted, immersive atmosphere created by the pilot’s narration and carefully selected soundtracks.
  4. 40+ Years of Experience: Island Helicopters has been operating for over 40 years and is one of the only owner-operator air tour companies in the state.
