Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, also known as \u201eAvatar Mountains\u201c is one of the most spectacular natural highlights in China. The national park located in the \u201eWulingyuan Scenic Area\u201c was China\u00b4s very first authorized national park, when opened in 1982. Its popularity, especially for international travelers, rose after the national park was declared as UNESCO Wolrd Heritage Site in 1992 and UNESCO Global Geopark. The hype started after the unique scenery of giant rocks became inspiration for James Cameron\u00b4s movie \u201eAvatar\u201c in 2009. Since then the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is better known as “Avatar Mountains”. The national park is one of China\u00b4s main attractions for foreign and domestic tourists. Even though it’s mostly crowded, this natural scenery has always been very high up our China bucketlist.<\/p>\n

When researching about Zhangjiajie National Forest Park I got the impression that the area is huge and there are countless options for exploring. So where to start, especially if you only have limited time? Of course I also expected China’s Avatar Mountains would be well developed, because the area has to handle more then 20 million visitors a year. But even after reading quite a few articles, travel guides and viewing pictures, still lots of questions were running through my head:<\/p>\n
